In 2015, Principal Jim Laussen visited St Anna’s Maternity Hospital in Turin Italy where a program of ‘beautification’ had been commenced that involved painting murals in the corridors and stairwells of the hospital to brighten up what was considered a dull environment. Upon his return, the idea was born for staff at the College to work as a team to produce a thing of beauty for both campuses.
The Heads of Visual Arts from both campuses met with the Principal to explore idea that would add beauty to the environments in which they work and that are shared with the wider Overnewton community. The Visual Arts teams from each Campus developed ideas that suited their environment, skills and influences. All staff were given the same two prompts to help them prepare for the project:
At Keilor Campus, it was decided to produce a 16 metre long grape vine that would wind its way around the main administration block, symbolising growth and development. Staff members were invited to a series of workshops where they could design and make grape leaves or bunches of grapes to decorate the vine. Some worked in clay, others with paints whilst others designed leaves that were later cut electronically on a laser cutter in a variety of materials.
At the Taylors Lakes Campus, the staff worked with artist Debbie Qadri to produce items in clay, drawing inspiration from renowned artists Reg Mombassa and Shaun Tan. The result was a surrealist mural featuring characters in a forest of learning that is situated on the wall of the Library building and is visible from the main entrance to the Campus reception.
Throughout the project staff learnt new skills, were challenged to explore a range of media and experiences, and were able to have fun learning together. Both installations were installed at the end of the 2015 school year, ready for unveiling when the staff returned in 2016.
We thank Year 11 student Sarah Cadzow for following the progress of this project and producing this video.
